How 3D engineers can work remotely

Select Engineering transitions to a #STAYHOME workforce with ease using Framewerx solutions

When Leo, Steve and I got together a little over 7 years ago I couldn’t have anticipated the current situation. In 2013 we asked, ‘how can we utilize emerging technologies to better align our business goals with both the costs of IT and our workforce?’

With that goal in mind, our team went to work. We had many challenges, both legacy software and new innovations in the market including Select’s 3D engineering needs to consider. After several months of PoC’s (Proof of Concepts) we landed on a DaaS (Desktop as a Service) solution. This allowed the staff to have a fast and consistent desktop that could be used from anywhere. In addition, because they were accessing the centralized desktop, all the resources where available to them, even if connected only via a cell phone.

While the original design was with both reducing overall costs and improve work productivity, it had the added benefit of a business continuity capability. Business continuity; though at the time it was thought of more for a disaster at the office (Fire / theft / vandalism), now can extend to our current pandemic and how that has changed the workplace today. With this decision and because of the benefits of utilizing our cloud offering, we used hardware that is traditionally only available to enterprise level customers; things such as redundant internet, enterprise grade firewall, All-flash disk arrays, networking, servers, power and even generator backup power. This is all protected with multiple datacenters and instant recovery technology all privately owned and operated for increased security.

Our open and collaborative partnership facilitated a new direction. Late 2019 we worked together to address the information technology landscape that was changing yet again. This change is from in-house/cloud architecture to a new way of doing business – Hybrid Cloud. The way of looking at company resources has shifted, no longer is the firewall your primary protection to corporate resources. New technologies like IoT (Internet of Things) and SaaS (Software as a Service) as well as customers and employees interacting with corporate resources from anywhere, changes the way businesses need to view their IT infrastructure. Couple that with nearly every platform needing to interact (PC, Mac, IOS, Android) we needed to ensure that Select was positioned to take advantage of these technologies while protecting their Intellectual property. With that in mind, we standardized on the Microsoft platform (Office 365, Teams, Azure AD connect) and modified the current environment to integrate with SSO (Single Sign On) that can be corporately controlled to ensure high security while maintaining flexibility to the needs of the business.

Framewerx and Select have been able to meet these challenges with minimal disruption to the business; from fast access to corporate resources thanks to our DaaS solution, to collaborating with internal and external parties utilizing our managed VoIP phone system or accessing SaaS solutions using the fully integrated security solutions. We think of Leo and Select as our company and through our partnership with Select we continue to embrace the challenges that come our way.
